Where to shoot a DJ video in Sydney: six locations that work

9 August 2026 · 3 min read

The location does more for a DJ video than the camera does. A good set filmed somewhere forgettable looks like every other set; an ordinary set filmed somewhere with a view gets shared. Sydney is unusually well supplied here, as long as you know what each kind of spot actually costs you in daylight, access and permission.

Here are the six we work in most, and the honest trade-off with each.

Rooftop

The city behind the booth is the most recognisably Sydney shot there is, and a skyline gives the wide angle something to do for a whole hour.

Best time: the hour before sunset. Midday on an exposed roof is the harshest light you will ever shoot in, and it puts hard shadows across the DJ’s face.

The catch: access. Roof access is almost always controlled by a building manager or strata, and wind is a real factor higher up — it moves light stands and gets into any microphone that isn’t a direct line off the mixer.

Warehouse

The one indoor option that still reads like a venue. Concrete, height and steel give depth behind the booth, and you get complete control over the light because there isn’t much of it.

Best time: irrelevant, which is the point. A warehouse is the reliable choice when the forecast is bad.

The catch: you have to bring every bit of the light. An empty warehouse with nothing but a work lamp looks like an empty warehouse.

Beach

An open horizon and nothing behind you. It looks like nowhere else and it’s the strongest single frame on this list.

Best time: early morning, before the sun is high and before the beach fills up.

The catch: the hardest conditions here by a distance. Sand gets into everything, salt air is unkind to equipment, the light is brutal without shade, and most Sydney beaches sit under council rules that require a permit for commercial filming. Worth it, but plan it.

Park

Green behind the booth, soft light under trees, and the easiest place on this list to park a car and carry gear a short distance.

Best time: late afternoon, with the sun coming through the trees rather than straight down.

The catch: public space means council permits for commercial shoots, and no control over who walks through your frame.

Backyard

Underrated, and the simplest session to organise: private property, no permit, no building manager, no strangers in shot. If it’s your place or a friend’s, you can start whenever you like.

Best time: late afternoon, though a fence or a wall gives you shade and more flexibility than an open space.

The catch: neighbours and noise. This is the one where a PA is most likely to end the session early.

Pool

Water moves, reflects and throws light around, which gives you something alive in the frame without doing anything. It’s the shot people stop scrolling for.

Best time: midday actually works here — overhead sun is what makes the water read as blue rather than grey.

The catch: electronics next to water. Everything needs to be set back further than feels necessary, and cable runs need planning rather than improvising.

What matters more than the choice

Whichever you pick, three things decide whether the day runs:

  • Permission, sorted in advance. Private property is the owner. Public space is usually the council. Turning up and hoping is how a session gets shut down halfway through.
  • Getting the gear in. Four flights of stairs with no lift changes the setup time significantly. Say so early.
  • Power, or not needing it. Our rig is fully portable and runs without mains, which is the main reason a beach or a rooftop is even on this list.

And a weather plan for anything outdoors. We’d always rather move a session than shoot a compromised one, which is why postponing for weather costs nothing under our booking terms.

The location also decides how much a third camera is worth. Somewhere with a skyline or open water gives a roaming angle something to shoot; a bare indoor room doesn’t — two angles or three walks through that call.
